High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom

At Whitton Murrami Public School, we recognise that every student has high potential, and we are committed to nurturing and developing their talents. High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is embedded in our everyday practice, ensuring that all learners are supported, challenged, and extended.

Our teachers identify and respond to students’ learning needs using evidence-informed teaching practices that promote deep thinking and stretch every learner. We provide a range of learning pathways, including enrichment opportunities, extension programs, and, where appropriate, acceleration.

Our classrooms are supportive, inclusive spaces that foster a strong sense of belonging. Students are encouraged to take risks in their learning, collaborate with others, and express their creativity. Flexible grouping, student-led learning opportunities, and strengths-based feedback help students understand their progress and set clear, achievable goals.

Every child at Whitton Murrami Public School has personalised High Potential & Gifted Educational goals as part of their Individual Learning Plans or Personalised Learning Plan, ensuring that learning is meaningful and tailored to their individual needs. Our teachers continue to engage in professional learning to strengthen their ability to meet the diverse needs of all students, including our high potential and gifted learners.

In the school

Across our school

At Whitton Murrami Public School, every student is recognised as an individual, so our opportunities are flexible, diverse, and designed to nurture each child’s unique strengths and talents.

Students deepen their skills and passions through a wide range of enrichment and extension experiences. Our specialist teachers provide targeted opportunities across creative arts, science, technology, culture and wellbeing. Programs such as Creative Arts Days, Music Lessons, Science Days and Cultural Excellence Days allow students to explore, extend and showcase their talents in meaningful ways.

Talent is celebrated through school showcases including Whitton’s Got Talent and the local schools performance SHINE, as well as opportunities to participate in regional eisteddfods. These platforms allow students to develop confidence, creativity, and performance skills across music, drama, dance, and visual arts.

Leadership is encouraged through student voice opportunities and participation in community events, while wellbeing remains central to daily school life with positive behaviour supports, inclusive activities, and strong relationships across our small school community.

At Whitton Murrami Public School, curiosity, creativity and excellence shape everyday learning. Our diverse programs ensure all students feel a sense of belonging while being challenged to reach their full potential.

Across NSW

Our STEM offerings are exceptional. Students participate in the Makers Empire/Naturally Brave project, Murrumbidgee Academy of STEM Excellence programs, the Bottle Rocket Challenge, LEGO engineering challenges, and the Premier’s Spelling and Reading Challenges.

Academic extension is further strengthened through our partnership with Aurora College, providing high-potential learners access to specialist online learning that broadens their curriculum pathways.

Statewide and NSW Department of Education support is available for high potential and gifted students, and we help with entries, preparation and reflection so every experience feeds back into learning.
